I’m currently looking for some Palladium Books fans that are interested in putting together online character sheets. It all started with my little brother and I wishing there was a half-way decent character sheet that would allow us to fit everything some of our characters had. I decided that I’d make a new one and overlay it with fillable fields in Adobe so we could squeeze more text in while still making it usable in printed form and be able to squeeze in our handwriting. Check the fillable PDF character sheet out in the downloads section to see what I came up with.

Once I got the ability to save the data in these sheets outside of the PDF, I found several ways (including collecting characters in spreadsheets) that I could store multiple characters and reload them into this character sheet as well, including storing all of a character’s stats in a database. This was a very crude structure but I’ve been working on a more nominal approach.

Here’s the idea for the project:

We’ll start with a Palladium character XML schema definition to hash out all relationships and dependencies between attributes, skills, etc. This will get published out at large and allow others to build compatible character sheets and move an entire character’s stats from one character sheet to another but dropping in your XML character data.

Taking the new XML format, we’ll develop a simple path to translate an entire character into any number of SQL relational databases. This will allow for central storage of multiple characters.

At this point, we can begin to fork the project several directions: GM campaign tools to keep track of vitals/bonuses/etc, online gaming tools, leveling tools, or any number of other possibilities.

I already have a couple of people interested, I’m just looking to increase the talent pool. If you know any of the following, I’d be interested in hearing from you and seeing how you could fit into the team:

XML and XSD

XSLT and/or XSL-FO

XQuery (and XPath)

XML/SQL

Javascript

PHP

Otherwise, stay tuned for future updates as we organize and put together a timeline.
